How Long Should a G56 Clutch Last?

G56 Clutch Life – What To Expect

You’re driving your Ram, and you notice that your clutch doesn't feel right. This is frustrating. The clutch should last 100k miles... and it hasn't. Is it time for a clutch replacement already?

If you've got a G56 transmission in your Ram, and your truck is going through clutches like kids go through sneakers, this guide is for you.

How Long Should a G56 Clutch Last?

Clutch life problems tend to occur for one of two reasons:

  1. You’ve got a Ram with a stock dual mass flywheel and stock clutch.
  2. You’ve got a Ram with an aftermarket clutch and solid flywheel that can’t handle your truck’s torque or normal use.

Either of these setups can cause your clutch to fail in as little as 15,000 miles.

However, if your truck has a single mass flywheel and a clutch rated for your truck's engine output and driving habits, it should last well over 100,000 miles.

Why The OEM Dual Mass Flywheel Is a Problem

The dual mass flywheel (DMF) used with the G56 transmission is widely considered a weak point. The damper system is too soft and barely handles the Cummins engine’s stock torque. Add even a basic tuner, and the DMF begins to fail.

As the damping system fails, the rotational play between the primary and secondary flywheels increases—from 6 degrees to 15 or more—and eventually leads to flywheel and clutch failure.

Solution: Convert your truck to a single mass flywheel (SMF). SMFs last longer and are often cheaper than replacement DMFs.

Note: Some recommend double-disc conversions, but we think they're unnecessary for most users. Learn why here.

Why Engine Upgrades & Heavy Use Accelerate Clutch Wear

Still having issues after converting to SMF? Here's why:

  • Poor quality aftermarket clutch – Choose a brand that manufactures clutches for commercial vehicles (e.g. Phoenix Friction).
  • Clutch isn’t rated for your torque output – Power upgrades increase torque and overwhelm stock-rated clutch discs.
  • Heavy-duty usage with light-duty clutch – Towing, off-road use, and performance driving require higher capacity clutch kits.

Common Warning Signs Your Clutch Is Failing

  • Slipping during acceleration
  • Jerking or unusual noises
  • Foul or burning smell
  • No smell at all – DMF could be slipping silently

Mileage is not a reliable indicator. A G56 clutch might last 100k+ miles, or fail at 15k miles depending on use.

Choosing a Replacement Clutch That Lasts

Our recommendations:

  • Convert to a Single Mass Flywheel if you haven’t already.
  • Avoid double-disc systems unless absolutely necessary.
  • Match clutch to power output – Account for tuners, downpipes, and other mods.
  • Upgrade based on usage – Daily towing, racing, and heavy hauling require stronger clutch kits.

Good luck – and remember, the right clutch makes all the difference!
